Social Skills Support
Individualized one-on-one support for children, teens, and young adults ages 6 to 21 who want to feel more confident and comfortable in friendships and social situations.
Developing friendships, communicating with others, and navigating social situations can sometimes be challenging for children and young people. They may have difficulty starting conversations, understanding social cues, managing conflict, or feeling comfortable around peers.
At Core Centre Psychological Services, Social Skills Support helps young people develop practical communication and interpersonal skills that can make everyday social interactions easier and more positive. Support is tailored to each individual's age, strengths, needs, circumstances, and goals.
What Can Social Skills Support Help With?
Support can focus on a variety of social and communication skills, including:
- Starting and maintaining conversations
- Making and maintaining friendships
- Understanding and responding to social cues
- Building confidence when interacting with others
- Understanding other people's feelings and perspectives
- Handling conflict, criticism, and rejection
- Expressing thoughts, feelings, and needs appropriately
- Speaking up and setting healthy boundaries
- Managing peer pressure
- Working, communicating, and cooperating with others
- Feeling more comfortable in social situations
- Developing greater awareness of how words and actions affect others
How It Works
Social Skills Support typically includes 6 to 8 individual sessions, with each session lasting approximately 60 minutes.
Sessions are available in person at our Mississauga clinic or online, depending on the young person's needs and circumstances.
Each session is individualized and may include discussion, practical exercises, role-playing, problem-solving, and strategies for handling real-life social situations. The goal is to help young people build skills they can use at school, with friends, at home, and in other everyday settings.
Parent Involvement
Parents can participate in part or all of a session, depending on the young person's age, needs, and circumstances.
When appropriate, parents receive guidance, feedback, and practical strategies to help reinforce social and communication skills at home and support progress between sessions.
Building Confidence in Social Situations
Social skills are not simply about knowing what to say or do. They also involve confidence, self-awareness, understanding other people's perspectives, and learning how to respond when social situations do not go as expected.
Through individualized support, children, teens, and young adults can develop greater confidence in communicating with others, building relationships, handling difficult interactions, and navigating social situations more successfully.
